QR Codes
Static vs dynamic QR codes: what's the difference?
Reviewed by the Tabreon team · Last updated: September 2026
Quick answer
A static QR code has its content baked in permanently. A dynamic QR code encodes a short redirect link instead, so the destination can be changed later and scans can be tracked.
Why this matters
Choosing the wrong type is a common and costly mistake — printing thousands of static codes for content that turns out to need updating means reprinting everything.
Definition
A static QR code encodes your final content (a URL, text, etc.) directly into the grid — what you see is what gets scanned, forever. A dynamic QR code instead encodes a short redirect URL managed by a service; scanning it hits that service, which redirects to whatever destination is currently configured, and can log the scan.
How it works
For a static code, the scanner decodes the grid and gets your final data immediately — no network request beyond opening the resulting link. For a dynamic code, the scanner opens the short redirect URL, which triggers a server-side lookup and redirect to the real destination, allowing the owner to change that destination or view scan analytics without changing the printed code.
Static vs dynamic at a glance
| Static | Dynamic | |
|---|---|---|
| Editable after printing | No | Yes |
| Scan tracking | No | Yes |
| Requires a backend service | No | Yes |
| Works if the service goes down | Always | No |
| Best for | Permanent content (WiFi, contact card) | Marketing campaigns, links that may change |
Common mistakes
- Choosing static for a marketing campaign URL that's likely to change or need tracking.
- Assuming a dynamic QR code works offline — it needs the redirect service to be reachable.
- Not accounting for the redirect service becoming unavailable years later, breaking every printed code depending on it.
Best practices
- Use static codes for content that will never need to change: WiFi credentials, a contact card, a fixed document.
- Use dynamic codes when you need analytics or expect the destination to change after printing.
- If using a dynamic code, choose a redirect domain you control and intend to keep running long-term.
